Travel to Tanzania

Airports & Airlines

Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the most convenient place to begin a People to People safari. Nevertheless, it is fine as well to come through Nairobi, Kenya (NBO) or Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania (DAR).

Kilimanjaro International Airport is roughly halfway between the tourist towns of Arusha (42 km) and Moshi (40 km) in northern Tanzania. Dar es Salaam International Airport is about 15 km from the city center and is well served with taxis and shuttle buses. Zanzibar International Airport is about 8 km from stone town.

KLM, British Airways and Swissair make direct flights from Europe to Tanzania. The South African Air, Ethiopian, Emirates and Air India are some of the other airlines that link Tanzania with Europe but with connections in their home countries.

It is also possible for visitors who intend to make safaris in Northern Tanzania to come through Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi. Reliable shuttle buses ply between the city of Nairobi and Arusha everyday, a distance of about four hours. It is also possible to get 3 leg tickets for example London-Nariobi-Zanzibar-London.

Visas

Most visitors to Tanzania will require a visa. This is available in advance or at the Airport. Citizens from the commonwealth countries are not required to obtain a visa except those from the UK, Canada, Nigeria and India. Costs vary with country, but the cost for UK and US passport holders as of 2005 is 50 US dollars.
